The Seiko "Black Monster" is making lookout history right in front of our eyes. Everyone interested in an automatc dive watch should look at this or its Orange, Down in the mouth or Yellow brothers as a "must have" watch. Every collector I know - no matter how expansive or selective - has a Monster in the watchbox.I am the proprietress of the Orange, Blue and Black Monster watches. The Blue is a "Limited Production" model - only so many made each year -- the Yellow Monster is already a folk tale -- only 300 made in it's Limited Edition and is no longer available through retail channels. Be ready to bid at auction for this model. So - what makes the "Monsters" watches of legend...?The Black Monster's 43mm case is 316L stainless dirk - featuring the Seiko made 7S26 21 jewel mechanical movement - not the best timekeeper in the world -- but spot on target enough for most of us -- 15sec +/- daily. The movement is not able to "hack" and is not manually windable. Either you clothes it...
    Chunker
I habituated to to make fun of my friend who collects automatic watches. Then my wife got me a nice titanium mechanical dive watch for Christmas a couple of years ago. It's as big as a clock and as heavy as a door knocker. Vigorous similar to anything we might be discussing here? The other day I dropped my beloved watch (made by an obscure German firm that specializes in "contract watches"). Much to my horror, it fell off the nightstand and the hands froze. I figured I'd be without it for at least a month while the marines center fixed it, so I took that as an opportunity to browse a few web sites to look for a temporary substitute. Absorbed in up spotting this chunker. The Black Monster. Cool name, strong reviews, three year warranty, well known tag, unbelievable price, what's not to like? I considered its Orange Monster sibling momentarily, then decided to go with underlying black. The Black Monster arrived today. Let me tell you, the pics on the site fail to do...
    Fast Watch - Excellent Quality
The 'Black Monster', as it is officially called by Seiko, is a illusive, durable watch. Be advised that the size of it may look deceiving. It is a large watch - ungainly and big. The band is large and can fit those who have a hard time with standard size watches. The face is magnified so it is very comfortable to read with the glow features. This watch puts any bulky Breitling or similar overpriced watches to suppress, for the simple reason that the watch is a durable great looking watch and its better to conserve a few THOUSAND dollars.I like that the bezel is off center so its comfortable and doesn't get in the way of your wrist.Everything about this eye is durable. I never plan to wear it for scuba diving but the quality is there. It's obvious. The only con is that I did not buy it sooner.Gauge a smart purchase and save the money over those overpriced competitors. Get rich in 20 years putting that hard cash away. Your Black Monster will probably still be...

Wow - everything I've wanted in a pay attention to I've finally found!
I have a bunch of watches in my collection; big, small; digital, analog; Divers, Chronographs, Atomics ... I ardour watches. But I recently began a search of reasonably priced self-winders. It also had to be trusty, and I would prefer a diver-type style. The past couple years I've taken a check to Invicta watches, but their quality is hit and miss. The low end (less than $100) Invicta seems less reliable than the lowly Timex; any honest self-winding Invicta seems to start around $250-300.I love Amazon's suggestioned thing. It picked up on my quest for an auto-winder diver watch, and steered me HERE. The Seiko SKX779 "Black Monster." Study after review was glowing. Overall, a 4 1/2 star watch, for less than $200. And Seiko reliability is unquestioned and unmatched.Look/Feel - I would think a "monster" of a watch would be big, along the lines of Invicta's Grand Lupah. That's not the case at all. A small bigger than some of my watches, but not overly so. This...
    Urbanized chic
Oh my God this is a undisturbed watch. If you want a steel sunflower on your wrist, if you want to be both funky and elegant, if you destitution to be hip and down to earth all at once, you certainly want this watch. James Bond is not cool because he wants to drag an Omega instead of this thing. Forget the fantastic brand history, forget the reliability and self-assurance, forget the price even - this watch is both beautiful and radical: if you don't want that, you need to ask yourself why.
    elevated watch/value
I have owned the "black monster" for three years now. Sold my "yellow monster" to my son because he liked it so much and I found I did not vigilance for the yellow face. Both are rugged, solid watches. The yellow is four years old and the black is three years old. They achievement 3-5 minutes per month, but most automatics do. You have to change the date five months out of the year anyway, so a reset is no incorrigible every other month. Had a general contractor doing some work for us and he liked the black monster so much he went out and ordered on, too.

Just bought a Seiko Black Monster Watch SKX779K, but noticed that the caseback was all polished . . .?

Have review on the web that the caseback should be part polished and part matt logo - does anybody know for natural - please help !!!

Maybe it is a carp off and not the real thing. If you got it at a store take it back and have them prove to you that it is the real thing.

What watch do I get as a backup?

As a traffic jam watch (under $600) do I get a used TAG Heuer 2000 series, or a Seiko Black Monster or a Seiko Atlas/Landshark. They all have self-governing movement, but the TAG is Swiss Made while the Seikos are Japanese. The TAG is $575 while the Seikos

Seiko's are delightfully watches that can handle quite a bit of strain when compared to their price. TAG's are nice but you would be getting it second-hand, which means a warranty would be out of the question and you'd be out $575.
